Sponsors, Supporters and Advertisers

I've had people complain about the advertising on the NHO ... in fact, I was one of them ;o). I have often been a bit frustrated with advertising ... so I know where you're coming from. I've come to accept that advertising and sponsors are an absolute necessity and the backbone of the interent. For me, it just comes down to responsible advertisng. Don't bomabard me with several pop-ups every couple minutes and we might get along, LOL. Anyhow ... I figure I'll address the concerns here in an open forum as best I can. ;o)

Let's get back to the question "Why Sponsors and Advertisers?" The answer is a simple one: There's no way to operate a site of any real substance without having some type of funding come in to help offset the costs. If it weren't for sponsors & advertisers ... the internet wouldn't be what you have come to know and expect from it.

We have all grown accustomed to seeing freebies, incentives and give aways these days. Guess who makes that possible? Yep! (Hey! You do understand!!!) Yep, sponsors make it possible for us to maintain the cost of operating our sites. In case you're wondering ... I don't make my living from this site ... although I wish I could ...... in fact I'm accepting donations toward "Help Darla quit her day job and be on the internet 24/7 fund" which you can help with Right Here. ;o)

Seriously, though ... even the "big guys" who have (or should I say had) money to advertise are closing their doors ... some millions of dollars in debt. Almost ALL the free hosts have stopped offering free hosting. Even search engines have started to charge! And it all started because revenue for advertising is down and people have quit supporting the advertising model. The end result is that your favorite sites don't make any money and can't maintain the costs of operation and end up shutting down.

So ... I'd like to encourage you to look at advertising a little differently from here on out. It is BECAUSE of them (not in spite of them) that your favorite sites are able to do what they do and that there are any freebies on the net. So practice a little understanding and patience the next time you encounter non-obtrusive ads on your favorite sites.

It's a sad fact that the MAJORITY of new internet businesses will close down in their first year .... If they make it past the first year, they're usually done before they hit the 5 year mark. I'd like to see the little guy make it (for more reasons than one). It's up to us ... we can help support the sites we visit or we can use 'em up till their done.
